Russian Ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin Dies

Just a day before his 65th Birthday:

Vitaly Churkin, who served as Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations since 2006, "died suddenly" in New York, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced. Churkin would have turned 65 on Tuesday.

The announcement "of the untimely passing away of Ambassador Vitaly Churkin this morning" was met with shock when it was delivered during a session at the UN headquarters.
"He was a dear colleague of all of us, a deeply committed diplomat of his country and one of the finest people we have known," a UN official who delivered the news to her colleagues said.
The moment of silence in Churkin's memory was announced at the UN.
"He was an outstanding person. He was brilliant, bright, a great diplomat of our age," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told RT, adding that the news of Churkin's death was "completely shocking."
Before he was appointed to represent Russia at the UN in May 2006, the diplomat served as ambassador to Belgium, ambassador to Canada, and liaison ambassador to NATO and the Western European Union (WEU).
In the 2000s he was ambassador at large at Russia's Foreign Ministry, while in the early 1990s he served as the special representative of the Russian president to the talks on the former Yugoslavia. Sputnik:
Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin was born in Moscow in 1952. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1974, beginning his decades-long career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shortly.
Ambassador Churkin served as Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations since 2006. Prior to this appointment, he was Ambassador at Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (2003-2006), Ambassador to Canada (1998-2003), Ambassador to Belgium and Liaison Ambassador to NATO and WEU (1994-1998), Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation to the talks on Former Yugoslavia (1992-1994), Director of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR/Russian Federation (1990-1992).
Vitaly Churkin held a Ph.D. in history. He is survived by his wife and two children.

  1. Events in Syria have gone beyond idea of creation of safe zones - Churkin (Part 2). "If we begin organizing some safe zones now, even if it happens correctly from the point of view of international law, specifically, with consultations with the government of Syria, I believe it will distract attention, forces and resources from the important task of returning people to their homes and ensuring normal life for them," Churkin said.

  2. very hard to 'wrap my mind' around this tragic incident and loss.
I really had deep admiration for Vitaly Chirkin and his ability to handle Samantha Power during her horrid outbursts was a rare gift. Such patience and diplomacy few people in office have such restraint and resolve.

I'm not going to speculate on his untimely death on this day of mourning out of respect for him and the Russian people, other than to say, the numbers are growing and I don't believe in coincidences when it gets to this point.

    May he rest in peace.

  3. thanks anon and karin:

I admired him also, especially when it came to Samantha Power and her, as you so aptly describe, "horrid outbursts".

It's best to not speculate at this time, agreed
It must be a shock to his family that's for sure!

US special forces carry out secret ground raid against Isil in Syria. They set up roadblocks around the town of al-Kubar, between the Isil-held cities of Deir Ezzor and the group’s de facto capital Raqqa.

  5. I am good, Penny. Just concerned with all the anti-Turkism and work that I need to do. Hope you are ok too. Think you should write more about identity politics and leave some links about it too.
