Bank of Canada Governor: "shadow banking system"

In this article the Governor of the Bank of Canada uses some pretty interesting language.
Interesting in that it could be demonized as conspiratorial, except it is actually accurate and truthful.
It seems as if there are two seperate banking systems one for the common folk.
The other one for high rollers and wheelers and dealers who can gamble other peoples hard earned pensions away through hedge funds and structured investment vehicles.
Yet, this "shadow banking system" is responsible for this economic mess the entire world is in.

Carney blamed much of the financial crisis on the growth of a "shadow banking system" -- including investment banks, mortgage brokers, finance companies, hedge funds, structured investment vehicles and the like.

When liquidity collapsed in August 2007, it brought the system down too.

"The shadow banking system was not supported, regulated or monitored in the same fashion as the banking system. With hindsight, the shift towards the shadow banking system that emerged in other countries was allowed to go too far, too long," Carney said.

Will NAFTA exterminate Canadian pesticide bans?

"A battle brewing over cosmetic (lawn) pesticides between one of North America's biggest chemical companies and Canadian lawmakers may end up re-shaping the future of Canada's environmental policies in the years ahead."

Dow Chemical has filed against Ottawa under Chapter 11 of the most 'wonderful' agreement, NAFTA, that ever benefitted Canada, NOT!

"That's why the company filed a notice of intent to take action under chapter 11 of NAFTA, Lachance adds, noting the Quebec ban sends a bad message to the business community.

When Life Hands You Lemons awards

So, somehow I earned an award from Skye.??

Is it time for one of those long winded acceptance speeches? Can my inner diva break free and become a demanding bitch?? I've always wanted too, but somehow the laid back part of me just doesn't want to expand that much negative energy.

According to this award, I have to now pass this on to some other deserving recepients?

My first "When Life Hands You Lemons" award goes to maggie @ Maggie's Musings. My long time cohort in informing the clueless and one third of an originating trio of troublesome forum posters

My next one goes to doug @ Doug Plumb the other third of the trio (with me filling the other role)

My next award goes to Brian @ Brian's Blog . One of the very first bloggers when I started my blog to drop me a friendly and welcoming note and link to me on his blog. It was much appreciated.

Then another blogger who, like myself, had the honour of having the notorious "do-gooder' Mubin Shaik, ( famed Toronto 18 RCMP informant, multi-millionaire vis a vis Canadian taxpayers) dollars visit their blogs, to blow smoke Disobedia !

Then I think Dee over at Thoughts by Dee deserves a "When Life Hands You Lemons" award. Why? Because it has to be so tough being a muslim in the political climate of this time. Yet, the vibe she gives off is never one of anger or fear, it is concern and caring. That has got to be tough in this day of ostracization!

Then nobody, skye gave him one for the haiku blog, I am not going to. Dam haiku's enough to drive you crazy! The award would be for the other blog, the church of NOBODY, and let this be a lesson to you nobody, when you have more then one blog, you can get more then one award.

Another blog that gets the "When Life Hands You Lemons" ,that I do look at, but sorry, I never leave a comment. Nonetheless it is a lovely blog. Paisley Ridge

Hmm next a new blogger, just starting out, and I am encouraging him or her to continue on, the more voices the better. Take the Red Pill.

This is a combo award to two bloggers.
Meria Heller and Dave McGowan. Meria who for reasons known to the listeners deserves this award not so much for her blog, but for the fact that she is one of the toughest and yet most loveable ladies I know of. When life hands her lemons she not only makes lemonade, but she shares it with everyone. And Dave McGowan just because I am such a huge fan of his blog, the Laurel Canyon series and his 9/11 stuff. Best of all, he is true to himself.

The tenth award goes to A view from the Swallows Nest, this blogger gives life to the words
"crotchety old man"! he he he. "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" All that aside, he is a good joe! What with all the whining at skye's I thought I should pass a nod along. Do with it what you will!

Jewish Defence League proud of censorship role in Canada

You just can't make this stuff up!
The JDL is proud of their role in getting the Harper government to cave to their unique interests.
They are bragging of the power they seem to have over an alleged democratic goverenment.
A democratic government that is supposed to act in the interest of Canadians in Canada.
Newsflash: Canada isn't Israel.

Jewish group proud of role in barring Galloway
The Jewish Defence League of Canada is taking credit for lighting the spark that ultimately burned a British politician's plans to enter the country.

The organization advised the federal government early last week about the impending speaking tour of George Galloway, the controversial British MP who has been a bitter critic of Israel.

"We asked that he not be allowed in," said Meir Weinstein, national director of the Jewish Defence League of Canada.

"Whether or not that had an effect on anyone – well, he's not in."

Like I said, Canada isn't Israel. Galloway came to speak on Afghanistan to Canadians, a talk many Canadians wanted to hear and should be able to hear.

Dave McGowan, Laurel Canyon, Mind Control via MK Ultra

So, I just got through listening to Dave McGowan being interviewed on Meria Heller's show.
Of course, on the Laurel Canyon material. They talked about the latest installment, and about that dam song American Pie. More on Gram Parsons, Altamont, the formation of the Hell's Angels, and that fellow that produced all that acid.

Augustus Owsley Stanley
III.
Yah gotta love that name!

Owsley the 3rd, showed up in Berkely, California just in time to help thwart the anti-war movement by giving out copious quantities of acid, freely. According to Dave McGowan 4,000,000 tablets of LSD were distributed for free. Yes that is 4 million tablets by one man! Quite a feat and one wonders how exactly could he afford to do so, did he have a 'generous benefactor' ?
All that acid would certainly aid in squelching dissent, getting the kids on drugs and off of productive activities, like participating in the politics of their country.

I am of the opinion it was all one big MK-Ultra mind control experiment on a larger scale.
Out of the psych wards and orphanages and onto the streets of a chosen city. Provide the free acid and have Timothy Leary
(CIA operative and pop culture guru) telling the kids to "tune in, turn on and drop out" It was perfect.

OH and btw unbeknownst to me till yesterday, the MK in MK-Ultra stands for mind control as it is spelled in German. Meinung Kontrolle. The word mind that is used means views or opinions, in other words what you think. Therefore to control what you think and all that entails. So named because this program was populated with the Operation Paper-clip scientists brought in from Germany after WW2. One was even a Jewish doctor, known as Doctor Green.

MK-Ultra sprang out of the Pheonix Program.
One of the people involved in the Pheonix Program is Michael Aquino. He shows up in the Laurel Canyon story, is a claimed satanist even operating his own church , Temple of Set. He was linked to a pedophile ring and is
linked to the HAARP project.

The Czech government falls!

I was surprised by this news, for two reasons.

The first reason has to do with the missiles the US wanted to put there. The very same missiles that were wildly unpopular with the Czech population.

The Czech government had infact pulled back missile treaties to be voted on by Parliament when they realized they could not win the vote. Czechs delay action on missile treaties
The Czech government said Tuesday that it was temporarily pulling back treaties on the installation of a U.S. missile defense radar system because of a threat by the opposition to vote them down in Parliament.

"This does not mean we would give up on the ratification process," Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said in a live television address. "We will return to this issue after talks with the U.S. administration and after the NATO summit in Strasbourg and Kehl."

The summit meeting takes place on April 3 to 4
How will the government falling effect the NATO summit and the missile vote?

The second surprise was the Czech President, who is also head of the EU government saying this:

The Czech President, EU leader has dismissed the US economic rescue plans as "a way to hell".

”All of these steps, these combinations and permanency is the way to hell,” he told Euro-MPs in Strasbourg"

If he is speaking on behalf of the European union it is a sign of division between Europe and the US. Obama has been openly critical of some of the European countries , not servile Britian, of course.

"Writing in newspaper articles published across Europe on Wednesday, Mr Obama implicitly criticised countries, such as Germany, France and the Czech Republic, that are opposed to further stimulus measures".

Now if I am not mistaken, this Czech President has been very pro-American, he had agreed to the missiles despite the population not wanting them in their country.

How to take all of this?

Don Mcleans -American Pie- through my eyes

Having thought and read about American Pie for two days now....
Why? That's what my hubby asks.
Why? I reply. Until I looked at those lyrics, I had never realized that this is quite an interesting song. I was hooked, and heck I had the time to spend analyzing! I notice it has been interpreted by others. Clearly there is something to this song that interests people. So, I am going to throw my two pennies in. ;)

The song is clearly retrospective and introspective in the beginning. The writer is reminiscing.
Fond memories of music he loved and how he wanted to make people dance.
"A long, long time ago"
Then something happened that shook his world, it is the death of Buddy Holly in Feb. 1959.
"But February made me shiver"
Buddy Holly left behind his bride of just 6 months who also happened to be 2 months pregnant.
"When I read about his widowed bride"
He will revisit the theme of death, not necessarily of individuals, throughout the song
"The day the music died"

He then recounts some of the music from the '50's
He also touches on the conflict between music and religion.
Presenting it as an either/or.
"And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?

Do you believe in rock n roll,

Can music save your mortal soul"

The song moves through 1959 to 1969
But not only that, it introduces the Jester to us and give us an hint of what is yet to come. The Jester is Bob Dylan. He symbolizes the emergence of folk music in that 10 year period "How does it feel, to be on your own, Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone
"Now for ten years we've been on our own"
"And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone"

The king and queen reference is interesting.
"But that's not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen"

Some think it is Elvis and Connie Francis being usurped by Bob Dylan. I don't know? It seems strange at this point in the song to go back to the big hitmakers of the 50's.
What I see it as and the clue to me comes from a line that follows this next one.
"In a coat he borrowed from james dean"
This line from what I read makes mention of similar coats worn by James Dean and Bob Dylan
This is the clue line
"And a voice that came from you and me"

I interpret this as Bob Dylan playing the Jester's role of politically taking to task the King, often done under the guise of humour or entertainment.
It is Bob Dylan (the Jester) speaking to leaders, or the powerful in a voice of the people, a voice that came from you and me.

The jester stole his thorny crown.
This line, again touches on the religious. The thorny crown worn by Jesus. Usurped again by music, this time in the form of folk music. Not Buddy Holly, but Bob Dylan.

Then.
"
And while lennon read a book of marx"
Some interpretations have that spelling as Lenin read a book of Marx, others as above postulating it as John Lennon. Either way, I see it as revolution, change is coming.

"The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark

The day the music died."
Here I am going in another direction from the common interpretation which has most people saying this is the Beatles, I disagree.
This to me is the Rolling Stones.
Introduced to us in tandem with Bob Dylan.
Also connected to Buddy Holly through the song "Not Fade Away"
Before his death Buddy Holly had been taken with the R& B sound. (The song contains a Bo Didley riff) The song Not Fade Away, was written by Buddy Holly.
It was then covered and released by the Rolling Stones in 1964, 5 years after Buddy Holly's death. In the Stones video for Not fade away, we see Brian Jones, soon to be deceased Rolling Stones founding member, who died under very questionable circumstances.

The lyric above from American Pie is in my mind the concert in Hyde Park done by the Rolling Stones shortly after Brian Jones death. The four (quartet) remaining Stones held there funerary tribute in the park and the audience would have sang dirges (funeral songs, possibly until dark)
There were 250,000 thousand in attendance and Britian's Hell's Angels acted as security. This scenario will present itself in the upcoming lyrics of American Pie

"
Helter skelter in a summer swelter"

This line was either ignored totally in some of the interpretations I saw, or again attributed to the Beatles. It is not about the Beatles. This is Manson & the Tate/LaBianca murders in July 1969. This is California, in the heat of the summer. The Beatles are secondary to this because Helter Skelter was scrawled on the walls, which did get them involved to an extent.
Like I said this is California and these next lines make it clear.

The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,

Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.

The players tried for a forward pass,

With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

The birds in this song are the band, the Byrds, a band out of California, and a clear reference to their song "Eight miles high"
The Fall-out shelter is a reference to the nuclear delusions and madness of that era.
The Jester on the sidelines is Bob Dylan, referencing an accident he had had for one, but also sitting on the sidelines while the band the Byrds release his work, with electric guitars, thereby electrifying folk music and temporarily leaving Bob Dylan sidelined.

This next part of the lyrics are interesting. Some see Sargeant Peppers and the Beatles in it.
Others refer to Vietnam.

"
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance! `
Cause the players tried to take the field;

The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed

The day the music died?

The football field as the battleground, The Sargeants (military draft) calling the "marching" tune.
With the youth just wanting to be young, enjoy their youth and dance.
It could be the draft for Vietnam, but I think it is a battle between authority and freedom.
With freedom losing out. (the music dying)

The next two stanzas of the song clinch the end. The end of innocence, the end of the hippie movement, the crushing of the counterculture, and the anti-war movement. They all symbolically die at the Altamont Speedway. Where here again, we see familiar players.

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.

So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!

Jack flash sat on a candlestick

Cause fire is the devils only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage

My hands were clenched in fists of rage.

No angel born in hell
Could break that satans spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night

To light the sacrificial rite, I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

The free show at the Altamont Speedway. Jack Flash, is Mick Jagger. This is the 1969 tour of America, the Stones were rumoured to be mixed up with Satanists? Truth or Promotion, who really knows? On the "Get yer ya yas out' disc, recorded at Madison Square Gardens one can hear fans telling Mick Jagger to 'sing you devil'

Was Don Mclean present at the Altamont concert ? Was he jealous of Mick's performance? Hm?
He had moved to California prior to this time period.

"No Angel born in Hell" is referencing the security at the Altamont concert, provided by the US Hells Angels. Though there had been no problem with the "angels" at the Hyde Park show, the Altamont show was entirely a different story. The 'angels' were brutalizing the hippies, until during Sympathy for the Devil, Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death by a member of the motorcycle gang. Despite what was happening in the audience the band played on and for the most part, the fans were mesmerized. This murder is noted as a sacrificial rite in the song American Pie. Was Don Mclean aware of the odd goings on in California at that time? The cults, the satanists? The music that died was more about the end of the counterculture movement in the '60's represented by the music of that era.

These next two parts describe the fall-out of the tumultuous decade that began in 1959 and end in 1969.

I met a girl who sang the blues

And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.

Unsure if this is Janis Joplin? She most definitely did sing the blues. But how about Joni Mitchell, a folk singer. She released an album Blue in 1971, the same year Mclean released American Pie. Joni is also linked to David Crosby (Byrds) The Blue album was a rather grim, or stark and unhappy record .

I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn't play.

Who knows, maybe a favourite record store was no longer there? Being unable to reconnect with youthful innocence?

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;

Interesting, he describes all sorts of verbalisation's, screaming and crying, but no words being spoken. Silent disillusionment and broken spirits.

The church bells all were broken.
Even the bells held their silence. No death knells when the music died.

And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.
Much debate on this part:
Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, The Big Bopper ?
or JFK, RFK and MLK?
or the Holy Trinity?
It's tough. I would rule out Buddy Holly etc., at this point in the song. These last two stanza describe the fallout phase of that decade so they don't fit.
The three assasinations would work so that is possible.
Or is it the possibility of a religious revival born out of the death of the music? Mclean repeatedly touched on the theme of conflict between popular music and religion. Could he have thought that with the death of the music scene, that religion would fill the void?

Last but not least the chorus:

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin, this' ll be the day that I die.
this' ll be the day that I die."

A wake. I saw someone else describe it as that. To me, it seems about right.
People sittin around drinking and reminiscing. Saying Good-bye to that which is gone.

Well that was alot of fun! I hope you enjoy the good tunes contained in the post!

Dam that Dave McGowan and Laurel Canyon!!!

Dave McGowan talked about this song- American Pie, in his latest Laurel Canyon piece.
And yes, I have heard it so often and yet.....
I never realized till I took a look at these lyrics today,
I mean really took a good look.
I had always thought this song was about the death of Buddy Holly.
But is really about alot more
The death of era, of a culture, of people, of musical styles.
And yes, the reference to Mick Jagger and the murder? ritual killing? at the Altamont concert is clearly there.
Oh and btw, I love that documentary, Gimme Shelter, clip. I have seen the documentary a number of times, it ends with Mick Jagger having the weirdest look on his face. ??????

Here are the lyrics, how do you read them?
American Pie

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin, this' ll be the day that I die.
this' ll be the day that I die."

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that youre in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

I started singin,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
And singin, this' ll be the day that I die.
this'll be the day that I die."

Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin stone,
But that's not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.

Israeli authorities proudly bursting children's balloons

Since Israel, prefers to pretend the Palestinians do no exist, and is incrementally erasing them from their country, why on earth would they allow them to celebrate their culture?

Israel police ban Arab culture day in Jerusalem

Israeli authorities broke up a series of Palestinian cultural events in Jerusalem on Saturday, disrupting a children's march and bursting balloons at a schoolyard celebration in a crackdown that underscored the emotional battle over control of the disputed holy city.

At one event, teenage girls at an east Jerusalem Catholic school released a few dozen balloons in the red, white, green and black colors of the Palestinian flag over the walled Old City. Israeli military police and soldiers quickly moved into the schoolyard and popped the remaining balloons, students said.

Zein, an 18-year-old student, said the police popped them with their hands and told them they weren't allowed to release them into the air. She asked not to use her last name, fearing further problems with the police.

An Israeli intelligence official at the school who refused to give his name said the balloons were burst "because they are Palestinian"

Wow, were the balloons Palestinians? Who the heck knew balloons had an ethnicity? How intelligent is an official who would say that? Probably the balloons were made in China.

Announcing the ban on Saturday's events, Israel's internal security minister, Avi Dichter, accused Abbas' Palestinian Authority of being behind the activities. Israel does not allow the Palestinian government to have a presence in Jerusalem, saying it undercuts Israel's claim to the city.

(Since Israel doesn't have a legitimate claim to Jerusalem, they just use oppressive tactics to deny Palestinians their rights.)

Israel annexed the eastern part of the city after the 1967 war, and today, some 180,000 Jewish Israelis live in east Jerusalem neighborhoods. The annexation is not internationally recognized.

A "Dear John" letter from Welland, ON, Canada

When I did the post, The "Lost Generation " speaks I had touched on the news that Welland, ON., Canada has been hard hit by lay-offs and closures in the industrial sector.

John Deere's closing was in fact the latest blow dealt to this small city, that had never really recovered from the de-industrialization that had taken place in the '80's.

In 2009 John Deere will completely shut down a profitable 100 yr old operation, to exploit cheaper wages in Mexico, turning 800 familes lives upside down and wreaking further havoc on the local economy.

Since doing that post it has come to my attention that a group of students from Niagara College are doing a documentary on this closure. It is entitled Dear John.

Here is the trailer for that documentary

Ogden, Utah, USA and Welland, Ontario Canada

In case anyone didn't get to see the reply banners to Welland here they are.

These 2 banners ,flown in the older part of Ogden, Utah were a direct reply to the banners flown in Welland, Ont., Canada.

"Your not alone in this struggle."

IDF soldiers says rabbis pushed "Holy War"

Well, well, well the Israelis got their own version of the crusades goin' on !
Against the "GENTILES", no less.

These rabbis are war criminals, in every sense of the word, inciting hatred against another group of persons, the 'gentiles' which basically means anyone not like them!

Religious delusion and fanatacism to the nth degree!

Soldier says rabbis pushed "religious war" in Gaza

Rabbis in the Israeli army told battlefield troops in January's Gaza offensive that they were fighting a "religious war" against gentiles, according to one army commander's account published on Friday.

"Their message was very clear: we are the Jewish people, we came to this land by a miracle, God brought us back to this land and now we need to fight to expel the gentiles who are interfering with our conquest of this holy land," he said.

The account by Ram, a pseudonym to shield the soldier's identity, was published by the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper in the second day of revelations that have rocked the Israeli military. (www.haaretz.com "Shooting and Crying, 2009").

They were leaked from a Feb 13 meeting of armed forces members to share their Gaza experiences. Some veterans, alumni of an Israel Defence Force (IDF) military academy, told of the killing of civilians and their impression that deep contempt for Palestinians pervaded the ranks of the Israeli forces.

The institution's director, Danny Zamir, confirmed that Thursday's published accounts were authentic.

More banners popping up, in other cities!

Well right on! Ogden, Utah has flown it's banners.
2 banners were flown on an overpass.

WorldinPerception

"The major economy in Utah is Industry. But with mass lay-offs and smaller fabricators going under, more and more people are getting desperate.

This banner was a direct reply to that which was flown in Welland, Ont., Canada. Your not alone in this struggle."

I responded to this blogger, and said I would love to see these popping up all over to get people acting and thinking!
Viva la banner revolution!

Someone investigating the 'Mash' bunch.?

I had to share since Mash is just about my "favourite bunch of posers" LOL! (facetious)

But who is this man?

Bill Warner

He left a link on the blog, under the Khalim Massoud post. Here is what he left, check it out!

FBI INTERNET CRIME COMPLAINT FILED AGAINST KHALIM MASSOUD AND MUSLIMS AGAINST SHARIA

Bill Warner
private investigator

Bill, evidence of MASH litters this blog. But, it is an illusion that they are Muslims, let alone devout Muslims. I don't for one second believe they are. I doubt anyone who has had any contact with them believe they are.

Canada trains soldiers for domestic useage

And so it goes. Following in the footsteps of Big Daddy to the south.

Military readies reservists for threats to 'domestic front'

Of course this article starts out with the usual clap trap. Terrorism, dirty bombs and wait for it..... 9/11!
But read through to the end, and most people never do, for the clincher.

Mr. Bercuson was surprised to hear, however, of envisioned scenarios that might require a form of constabulary or policing function for reserves in civilian containment and security.
civilian containment and security?
Does this sound like a potential martial law situation? Citizen round-up?

Picture this. Your city, your town. Disenfranchised youth facing a uncertain future. What would you do to make your voice heard?

Well some unknown young individuals chose an interesting way to let their opinions be known to the public at large. I would like to help them get their thoughts out to an even larger audience.

This past week these banners were hung on the Main Street bridge, (itself an icon of better days) in the city center of Welland, ON., Canada. This small city has been hard hit in the recent economic downturn. With news of plant closures and major lay-offs . In the age of globalization, these good-paying jobs will soon be filled by persons being paid very low wages in Mexico.

Indeed, the future must look quite bleak to the young persons that reside in that small city. As it must look bleak to many young persons in so many cities and towns, large and small. Watching, as their parents lose jobs, families lose homes and the future becomes more grim and uncertain.
What will come of their hopes and dreams? Will they become a lost generation? A fate they seem to already have accepted.

Army Manual emphasizes electronic warfare

This is such a 'comforting' news story, it gives me that warm and snuggly feeling.

It makes one think warmly of combat troops patrolling the city streets, armed with electronic crowd control devices.

Especially at times like the present when this economic downturn, and that is being polite, is going to be the catalyst of much unrest, resulting in large and angry crowds.
For that problem there is an electronic warfare solution!

The Army is updating its plans for electronic warfare, calling for more use of high-powered microwaves, lasers and infrared beams to attack enemy targets and control angry crowds.

The Army is in the process of training 1,500 soldiers and officers in electronic warfare at Fort Sill, Okla., by September 2010, giving the military its largest electronic warfare cadre.

China Replies to US navy claims

China says a US Navy ship involved in Sunday's confrontation with its vessels off the southern island of Hainan violated international and Chinese law.
Foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said US complaints that five Chinese vessels had harassed the USNS Impeccable were "totally inaccurate".

Beijing says the US ship was conducting activities within the waters of its special economic zone.

Under international law, Chinese territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles (22km) off its coast and its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) extends 200 nautical miles.

Meanwhile, US navy surveillance vessel was on routine operations in international waters 75 miles (120km) south of Hainan island.

China says the US was in its Exclusive Economic Zone -but the two sides disagree on what activities are allowed in an EEZ

So they most likely were in the Chinese Exclusive Economic Zone.

China says that any intelligence data gathering by foreign governments within its EEZ is illegal - but the US does not agree with this.

Imagine my non-surpise that the US does not agree with China's claims.

The Impeccable is used to map the ocean floor with sonar. The information is used by the US navy to steer its own submarines or track those of other nations.

What should come as no surprise there just happens to be a large Chinese submarine base on Hainan island.

Aggressive manoeuvring by ships of rival navies in sensitive international waters is not uncommon, correspondents say.
What a convenient distraction!

US claims 5 Chinese boats "harrass" Navy Ship

Does this storyline sound familiar??
It should because it is quite similar to this one.

Iranian boats 'harass' U.S. Navy, officials say
Five Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats "harassed and provoked" three U.S. Navy ships early Sunday in international waters, the U.S. military said Monday, calling the encounter a "significant" confrontation.

The Iranian incident turned out to be much ado about nothing. It was Pentagon propaganda, complete with dubbed audio!

Can't help but notice the similar language used, "harass provoke , dangerous maneuvers", and 5 ships from Iran, 5 ships from China

So, Is this really???
1. Much needed distraction for the American people?
2. An opportunity for Obama to speak on something else, anything else, besides economic woes?
3. An opportunity to display Obama's ability to talk tough and be inspirational, by which I do mean to manipulate the American people through fear.

Close call off South China Sea

'In a dangerous high-seas game of chicken, five Chinese boats harassed and came perilously close to colliding with a U.S. Naval surveillance ship off the coast of Hainan Island Sunday, after the Chinese military ordered the ship to leave the area or "suffer the consequences." The Navy dispatched a destroyer, the USS Chung-Hoon, to the vicinity as a precaution.

" after several days of "increasingly aggressive" acts by Chinese ships in the region"

The Chinese Flotilla (?) "included a Chinese Navy intelligence collection ship, a Bureau of Maritime Fisheries Patrol Vessel, a State Oceanographic Administration patrol vessel and two small Chinese-flagged trawlers, officials said."

A fisheries patrol boat and two flagged trawlers?

Apparently some of the people on the boats were waving Chinese Flags at the US Surveillance (spy) ship. The surveillance ship, the US claims was in International waters, but the waving of the Chinese flags makes me wonder..... was the US ship spying in Chinese waters?

The US claims "operating legally in international waters," and that they were "towing an underwater sonar bouy, trolling for Chinese submarines"

The US claims the crew aboard one of the Chinese ships (was it the fishing trawler?) also used a grappling hook to try to snag the tow line that was dragging the sonar bouy through the water.

The US ship crew "then turn firehoses on one of the Chinese ships, at which point the Chinese crewmembers on deck stripped down to their underwear"

The USNS Impeccable (T-AGOS-23) is an ocean surveillance ship in the service of the US navy.

Canada's Passport: It get's around, and not just with Canadians!

So, I was wondering what came of the fraudulent Canadian passport useage by Israel's spies in '97?... How did Canada react? It had been previously described as a "limp wristed" reaction.

Too kind, it was positively wimpy! It was a limp wristed lash with a wet noodle.

Let's see Canada's ambassador to Israel was recalled!
But Canada did not give the old heave ho to the Israeli ambassador? This move was described by Foreign Minister Axworthy as "a fairly serious step." Fairly serious my buttocks!

Oh and Israel wrote a "letter of apology" that was described as an expression of regret.
But what did they regret?
That they had used Canadian passports to attempt an assassination? Or did they actually regret that they had been caught red-handed doing so?

Reform Party Foreign affairs spokesman Bob Mills, who called for visa, trade or intelligence sanctions to force Israel - or at least Mossad - to sit up and take notice. "To get the message across, I'm not sure that recalling an ambassador is enough," said Mills.

What a laugh coming from the the Reform Party, which form the base of the Harper Conservative Party at this time. The Conservatives under the Harper leadership, can't get enough of Israel's crimes, from Lebanon to Gaza.

To add more fuel to the fire along comes Norman Spector, Canada's former ambassador to Israel publicly wondering if "Canadian intelligence authorities were involved in this operation with the Israelis." Which CSIS promptly denied.

Actually if one reads this article Norman Spector has alot more to say about this subject.

"Canadian immigrants to Israel are routinely asked to turn over their passports for Mossad use."

"It goes beyond information sharing," claims Spector. "There are joint operations." He has reported, for instance, that there was a CSIS operative working for him at the Tel Aviv embassy and that he was a witness to "a lot" of CSIS activities. Spector, who also served as former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's chief of staff, said that Canadians do not know of Canada's obligations pursuant to its commitments at the Sharm el-Sheikh anti-terrorism" summit in March 1996.

After this incident in '97 it was again reported in 1998 that Canada was "investigating" allegations that Israel was still using Canadian passports

Canada probes Israel passport claim
Thursday, November 5, 1998

On CTV network television, Mr Leslie Lewis said Mossad agents approached him twice recently, asking to use his passport and that of his daughter.

Mr Lewis said he had allowed his passport to be used by the Israeli government until last year's assassination revelations, but refused new requests this year to use the family's passports and alerted the authorities.

Israel has denied the allegations, saying "Mossad does not use Canadian passports."

When Israel denies the allegation does it mean Mossad didn't ever use Canadian passports?

In 1973, a woman member of a Mossad team that was systematically shooting its way through a list of Palestinians held responsible for the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympic Games carried a Canadian passport.

In 1974, about 50 blank Canadian passports disappeared from a vault at the Canadian Embassy in Vienna. In Nicosia a year later, Cypriot authorities seized the kit of a Mossad team after a hotel bombing in which a Palestinian guerrilla leader was killed. The passport used by one of the Israeli hitmen bore a number that revealed it to be from among the 50 stolen in Vienna.

Or, in 1998 did Israel mean we don't use them anymore? Cause that is not true either! It seems after Israel's expression of regret ('97) and subsequent denial ('98), the Canadian passport shows up again in New Zealand.

The court heard that one of two men charged with participating in an organized crime group to obtain a false passport had earlier travelled into the country with a Canadian passport.

Urie Zoshe Kelman, 30, entered the country with Canadian documentation five years ago, on Feb.2 1999, the court heard. His stay lasted eight weeks and he left the country, headed for Melbourne, Australia, using a temporary replacement Canadian passport obtained while in New Zealand.

While the Canadian government is keeping a close eye on the Auckland court case -- it learned of the developments just two days ago there has been no official communication with the Israeli government.

Note to silverfish: It appears the passport really is as you stated, a goddam piece of paper, and the Canadian government itself treats it as such.

Which leaves me with one other question, all this so-called secure ID, what is the point?

The "Canadians" who assassinated for Israel

Seems the Toronto Star decided it was not 'anti-semetic' to post an article about a new book coming out. And of course it wasn't, it's just the facts of the matter. Actually it was two articles!
In one paper! Will wonders never cease?

I am sure some Canadians remember when Israel/Mossad used counterfeit Canadian passports to assassinate a person associated with Hamas? If you don't know this story read and learn. It involves Israels use of WMD's. Specifically, nerve gas! Remember Saddam had to be overthrown for that? Then their is targetted assasination of political leaders. Sounds rather like terrorism, does it not. And of course not to be forgotten counterfeit Canadian Passports. Yup, Mossad posing as Canadians! By Way of Deception eh? Let us take a walk down memory lane......

How 'Canadians' almost ignited a war
Book sheds new light on Israeli spy service's attempt to assassinate middling Hamas operative

The audacious Israeli plan was to spray deadly nerve gas into the ear of the then-middling Hamas operative. This, they managed – but as the stricken Mishal took ill in the Jordanian capital of Amman, the "Canadians" were captured. And that is when all hell broke loose.

McGeough's gripping account spares no detail, providing a fly-on-the-wall vantage of the rising diplomatic panic that sent shudders through world capitals.

In a span of hours, the story went from empathy – one Canadian diplomat went so far as to fetch one of her husband's shirts for the battered "tourists" – to outright fury, as Jordan's King Hussein ordered his troops to rotate the guns defending the Israeli embassy, putting the Israelis in the crosshairs.

Kill Khalid also provides startling new detail on the anxieties in Jean Chr├ętien's Ottawa, where government mandarins were in a frenzy to get their hands on the forged passports. McGeough takes us inside the king's palace for the clandestine handover of the crucial documents to Canadian officials – and how Canadian intelligence officials mounted a near-military operation to get them home to Ottawa, braced for counterattack at every stage of the journey.

Mishal's arch-nemesis, Benjamin Netanyahu, is about to again become Israel's leader.

The hawkish Netanyahu was a largely unrepentant prime minister after Mossad blew the killing in Jordan 12 years ago. Only once since then has he stood in proximity to Mishal – the two men both attended King Hussein's funeral in what McGeough calls "a significant accomplishment on the part of Jordanian security to keep them apart."

"The thought that Israel could just manufacture Canadian passports and use them in the most horrendous of circumstances was bizarre. But the limp-wristed Canadian response was equally bizarre.

Kill Khalid: The Failed Mossad Assassination of Khalid Mishal and the Rise of Hamas is the unsurpassed story of how Israeli spies masquerading as Canadian tourists all but ignited a new Mideast war in the peace-seeking days of 1997.

Only later, when all assembled in one of their rooms, did they abandon the pretense. These "Canadian tourists" were agents for Mossad, the fabled Israeli intelligence service. Their mission in this quiet, U.S.-friendly Arab city was state-sanctioned assassination – in the name of Israel.

Their orders were to kill Khalid Mishal. The 41-year-old Palestinian activist had been overlooked by the legion of foreign intelligence agents operating in Amman. But at the Mossad bunker near Tel Aviv, Mishal was seen as the worst of a dangerous new breed of fundamentalist leaders. He was hard-line, but he did not wear a scraggy beard or wrap himself in robes. Mishal wore a suit and, as the man accused by Israel of orchestrating a new rash of suicide bombs, he was, by regional standards, coherent in his television appearances. From the Israeli perspective Khalid Mishal was too credible as an emerging leader of Hamas, persuasive even. He had to be taken out.

More than a week after Israel's bid to kill Khalid Mishal, Canadian prime minister Jean Chr├ętien was still fending off strident charges at home that his government had been complicit in the bungled Mossad mission. And the stakes were higher than they might ordinarily have been because this was yet another episode in an embarrassing history of Israeli killers abroad taking cover as Canadian citizens.

Perhaps it is time to lock up the "sane" people?

After all, isn't it always the 'sane' ones that wage war, causing untold death and destruction? Hmm maybe we would have some peace if we locked the alleged 'sane' people up? Just a thought!

Mentally ill at risk of violent abuse
Mentally ill people living in the community are twice as likely as members of the general public to be the target of violent abuse.

AGAIN!

Mentally ill people living in the community are twice as likely as members of the general public to be the target of violent abuse.

As many as 16 per cent of patients with psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia and manic depression, were victims of violence in the past year, compared with just under 7 per cent of the general population.

These alarming findings were revealed in a study published last week by the Institute of Psychiatry in London. It is based on interviews with 708 patients with psychotic disorders living in four inner-city areas.

Dr Elizabeth Walsh, a senior lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, who carried out the research, said it showed only a small number of those with mental illness were dangerous. "We are always reading in the media about how people with severe mental illness are dangerous," she said. "We may see them as a risk but we are probably a greater risk to them."

Mentally ill unfairly portrayed as violent

Vince Li Trial- Day 3

Just a general comment, something I have observed all the while with regards to the media coverage surrounding this event.

The coverage from the Winnipeg Free Press, and the Sun Media outlets has been the most sensationalised coverage I have seen. They positively relish in regurgitating every gory detail of this murder. Always with a warning, which they of course know is even more titilating. Oh, I realize it sells papers a plenty, and a lot of people love every sordid detail, they cling to it and use it to stir themselves up, it empowers them to spout off irrational self-righteous opinions.

But the reality is mental illness is a subject far to many people know very little about and it is a disease that already carries such a stigma. There is such a shame attached to it. Particularly in intolerant judgemental societies that seem to be par for the course in Canada. Yes, Yes, I know Canadians like to think their so tolerant. The reality is the vast majority of Canadians are intolerant of anything different, including the mentally ill.

The imbalanced coverage by the press, particularly in Manitoba, for the sake of selling more papers, will only feed the intolerance, in an area where information, education and enlightment of the population is very important at this time.
But then informing, educating and enlightening the populace is not the job of the press anyway. The job of the press is to sell and increase advertising revenue!

Back to the trial coverage:

#3: And to no one's surprise: Li found Not Criminally Responsible
or Judge finds Li not criminally responsible in bus beheading

#2: Additional background information on Vince Li here

#1: Excerpts from the agreed statement of facts for the trial of Vince Weiguang Li you can get the rest here

Vince Weiguang Li was born in Dandong China on 30 April, 1968. He graduated from the University of Wuhan Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science (Computers) in 1992. Mr. Li immigrated to Canada in 2001, and became a citizen in 2005. He graduated from CDI College (Computer Programming) in 2002.

Now I understand how he came in to Canada as a skilled worker

In this agree statement of facts I see still, there is no mention of the RCMP standing around outside of the bus for almost 5 hours? Was that not mentioned at all? Or did this person not include it in this account? That response by the RCMP, or non-response has stuck in my craw all this time.

This article from the Globe and Mail has information on his time in ON.

In early September, 2005, Toronto police picked up a “dishevelled and confused” Chinese immigrant as he wandered aimlessly along the city's Highway 427.

Over the previous months, the hard-working, church-going Winnipegger had begun hearing what he thought were commands from God.

The orders started as general advice, but gradually morphed into more bizarre instructions – buy land he couldn't afford in Thompson, Man., travel to Toronto for work, and dispose of all his personal belongings, according to a psychiatric report released Wednesday in the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench.

Failing in his Toronto job search, the man was apparently commanded to return home. So he began walking. For several days, he followed the sun along Toronto's highway system until police found him and, against his will, took him to the emergency room at William Osler Health Centre in Etobicoke.

Within 10 days, Vince Li said that he fled the hospital and returned to Winnipeg, defying doctors who had begun treating him for schizophrenia, according to the report.

I didn't think I was sick,” Mr. Li is quoted as saying. “I lost my temper one night and they gave me a needle and I slept for two or three days. When I woke up, I saw the doctor, who told me I should stay longer, but I got scared; I took my stuff from the nurse and took the bus back to Winnipeg.”

Despite being placed on a Form 3 certificate – an involuntary admission document that forces patients thought to pose a risk to themselves or others into a psychiatric facility for up to 14 days – Mr. Li defied doctors by leaving after just 10 days.

and reported here
A man accused of beheading and cannibalizing a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in Canada apologized to police when arrested and begged officers to kill him.

Of course, I will update. I am waiting for the Judge's oral decision today.

Quote of the day: Richard C Cooke

"Until the last year, the biggest growth industry within the U.S. had been the financial sector, producing profits of over $500 billion as late as 2006. In other words, the U.S. has replaced working for a living with the manipulation of money and the extraction of interest, either by lending it or by brokering the lending and investment by foreigners. In order to enrich themselves, the financiers, with a lot of help from the government, created the merger/buyout bubble of the 1980s, the dot.com bubble of the 1990s, and the housing/equity/hedge fund/derivative bubble of the 2000s.

from his interesting article: “The Last Picture Show”

Vince Li Trial Day 2

2nd- Vince Li Trial Day 2 , again from reporter for the Winnipeg Free press

Defence witness Dr. Jonathan Rootenberg to take stand today in Li mental fitness hearing in Winnipegpg.
Dr Jonathon Rootenberg: University of Toronto, Lecturer
Expected to be a short day
Reporter: Li now being brought in. Describes an immediate hush, save for the clinking of cuffs in this big courtroom.
Dr Rootenberg: tells court Li did not know what he did to McLean was wrong, was "quite psychotic" at time of killing.
Dr Rootenberg: Li suffers from "major mental illness", hearing voices/delusions.
Dr R: Tells court Li was born with illness.
Crown: Can he recover?
Dr R: No. Can only be managed.
Crown: Why kill McLean?
Dr. R: Li's mental illness was not treated. Since killing (he has been) under 24 hr watch. Li NOT faking. (reporters emphasis)
Dr. R: Li believed "God's" hands killed McLean, who Li saw as "demon".
(Did he believe his hands were the hands of God, or his hands were doing God’s work. This is consistent with what the other doctor stated, that Li perceived Mclean as evil??.)
Court hears that Li (believed) he had to separate McLean's body parts so McLean not come back to life.
Reporter: Dr Rootenberg finishes bulk of testimony (questioned?) by Li's lawyer Alan Libman. More extensive medical reports filed as exhibits. (approx 25 minutes passed)
Crown x-exam
Dr R. says in time Li may "process/reconcile" what he did to McLean.
Reporter: Court says Li in only in very early stages of treatment. Possible Li suppressed some memory of McLean's slaying. ( court says or does Dr R say under cross examination?)
Crown: Is Li a high risk?
Witness Dr R: Yes, significant risk.
Crown: Kill again?
Dr. R: No, if (Li) keeps up treatment.
Crown: asking questions about Li's mental history in ONT about five years ago when hospitalized there. Judge says no bearing on case.
Dr. Rootenberg ends testimony. Now in closing arguments.
Defence says Li should go to hospital for treatment, not prison.
Defence says court should find Li Not Criminally Responsible (NCR).
Reporter: If found NCR, (not criminally responsible) which all agree most likely, Li held in secure facility for indefinite time period, perhaps even rest of his life.
Defence finishes it's final (summary, questions????) Now Crown's turn
"This man must be crazy." (reporters opinion?)
Crown attorney is Joyce Dalmyn. She tells QB judge John Scurfield Li meets NCR criteria, he did not appreciate horror of his act.
Judge Scurfield, He adjourns hearing until 10 a.m.(tomorrow) for proper oral decision given high publicity of case.
That was an interesting hour!

I am not sitting in the courtroom but even so, I am getting the sense that this is a production of sorts. Everything pre-agreed upon. Li is going to be declared NCR, both lawyers for the crown and defence agree he is, there is no disputing it. It was decided a month after the crime that Li was "fit for trial". I assume this means he was heavily medicated, medicated enough to get him to be compliant, not necessarily fit, but compliant anyway. From there, he can expediently be tried, I mean 3 days- zero witnesses? He can plead not guilty by reason of insanity, and then he can be locked up, key thrown away.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st-This article clarifies some of the questions I had yesterday:
Winnipeg beheading killer a 'decent man': Doctor

Yaren, a witness on behalf of the Crown who is the director of forensic psychiatry for both Manitoba and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, has concluded Li should be found not criminally responsible for his actions based on his mental state at the time.

Such a ruling would send him to a hospital, instead of a prison, for an indefinite period.

I am going to include a link to a book here. A book that makes it clear why the mentally ill should not be "behind bars" Why a jail is no place for them. I've read through parts of it, it seems to be applicable to the reasoning in sending Li to a psychiatric institute as opposed to jail.

Criminalizing the Seriously Mentally Ill

Yaren said Li began experiencing psychotic episodes around 2003, including a 2005 incident where he was picked up by police walking down Highway 401 in Ontario, believing he was "following the sun" after shedding most of his possessions.

He was briefly hospitalized in Etobicoke, Ont., but received no further followup after refusing to accept he had an illness or take any treatment, court was told.

DeDelley has said she wants the law changed so anyone found not criminally responsible for a crime still serves time behind bars.

I'll update this post a news becomes available.

Vince Li Trial

Winnipeg Free Press had a reporter Bruce Owen "twittering" from the trial. You can read it here

I followed it, reformatted it and fixed the typos.
I also have some additional questions

Li in court, the reporter observes his dress, that he has lost weight and is shackled.

Li pleads not guilty.
His Lawyer goes through some of Li's background, that info is not reported on here.
Nor is it covered in this news story
Details about beheading recounted in Winnipeg court
Sole issue for judge is whether accused should be held criminally responsible
“Dalmyn told court about Li's background, which included coming to Canada in 2001 from China and becoming a Canadian citizen in 2005“
Any information given regarding his life in China, how he came in as a skilled worker?

Winnipeg Free Press Reporter notes: Li leaves note for his wife “I am gone, don’t look for me. I wish you were happy.

The court hears: Li distraught on bus. Li stabs Maclean with black handled knife, for no apparent reason. Mclean fights back and tries to escape. Li grabs him and continues attack. Li tries to get off bus, is prevented, goes back to behead Mclean. Witnesses see Li with Mcleans head in one hand, knife in the other, he tries to exit bus again and is prevented. Further mutilates Mclean with scissors and knife. Li says he has to stay on the bus forever.(though he has tried to leave twice) Crown says Li ate the body parts. He is seen licking his hands of blood (doesn’t mean he ate anything) Li denies that he did this. Li is tasered as he leaves the bus holding body parts in a bag. 1/3 of Mcleans heart and both his eyes missing, parts never found.
I note here the response, or I should say non-response of the RCMP is not questioned, no surpise there.

Judge calls for recess, when back from recess will start discussing issues of sanity. Did he know right from wrong??
Back to trial
Dr. Stanley Yaren called by the crown takes stand
Yaren tells court he saw Li nineteen times, for a total of 12 hours.
He also spoke to Li’s wife
Yaren says Li suffering severe psychotic disorder, hearing God’s voice, needing to protect himself.
Sat next to Mclean, because Mclean gave him a nod.
Li told Yaren, God told him Mclean was “force of evil” out to kill him.
Li then “commanded” by voice to behead Mclean, so Mclean could not come to life.
Yaren tells Winnipeg court Li is schizophrenic

Can Li be treated for eventual release from secure hospital/facility. Who is asking this question, I am unsure?
Yaren: Li is gentle, polite, humble, respectful of authority and a hard worker
Crown: Why kill Mclean?
Yaren: “He genuinely believed he was about to be executed”
Crown: Why the greyhound bus
Yaren: Didn’t matter . Could be anywhere.
Crown: Why did Li’s illness get worse?
Yaren: Stigma of mental illness. Denial of it. (Is Yaren suggesting the stigma associated with mental illness caused Li to deny his condition?)
Crown: Was McLean’s killing predictable?
Yaren: No, Li had no history of violence
Recess-

Court resumes:
Dr. Stanley Yaren: Says Li mutilated in delusional frenzy so McLean cannot come back to life.
Crown: If Li allowed off GH bus would mutilation happen?
Yaren: We'll never know.
Yaren : Li denies eating body parts of McLean. Appears to be out of mind.?
Crown: What's chance of recovery for Li?
Yaren: Li has potential for significant recovery.
Crown: Is Li faking?
Yaren: Not logical to become monster and then fake it so quickly.

Reporter: Going through Li's prior mental health run-ins in ONT. Few years before McLean's slaying.
But he is not mentioning when , where, ??

The court is told Li diagnosed w/ schizophrenia in ONT. Heard "God's" voice then.
Yaren tells court Li disputed finding and did not need treatment.
Did he actually say a diagnosed schizophrenic did not need treatment, or did he say Li would not get treatment, because I am having a real problem with that comment.

Court hears that while beheading McLean on bus, Li told driver to "Call emergency."
Driver off the bus, did he scream it through the window? Unclear

Yarin tells court Li expressed regret, that maybe he made mistake by listening to "evil god".
Yarin: just recently Li expressed regret for McLean's family.
Yarin: says Li believes he will be punished by God for his deed.
Yarin notes Li is on anti-psychotics.
Yaren: most recent delusion for Li, God tells Li to starve himself to death.
Crown: When can Li be released?
Yaren: We don’t know
Crown: If Li fd NCR where should he be held? (fd??)
Yaren: Secure hospital ward. Li still danger to us and himself.
Yaren:Li a decent person. Li a victim just like Mclean and McLean's family..
Yaren: says McLean's grieving family should not hate Li.
Yaren; don’t hate the person, hate the disease,"
Yaren tells court. "Blame the stigma for people not getting help".
( I agree with that and what a stigma it is!)

Another recess
Reporter: "if Li not fit to stand trial is up to QB Judge John Scurfield although it appears to be already decided based on testimony."
it was already decided that Li is fit to stand trial, read here:
Accused in bus beheading fit to stand trial
October 6, 2008

Li's lawyers now in x-exam (cross-examine) of Yaren, hammering home Li was deeply delusional on day McLean killed + mutilated.
Yaren finishes testimony. Yaren ends saying Li thought sun was source of voice in his head.
Court adjourns

Vince Li Trial begins

Li murder trial begins this morning

Two doctors as witnesses and no one else.

Tim's Law

'I don't think mental illness ought to absolve you of your responsibilities" Carol De Delley said Sunday. "Once the crime has been committed, I still believe they need to be held responsible, otherwise what sort of a message are you sending?"

Here is the disconnect, this sentence sums it up. Carol DeDelley thinks mental illness should not absolve you of your responsibilites. Now, who is claiming Vince Li is NOT responsible for this terrible murder? No one. Not one person. His own lawyers acknowledge he committed this act, their is NO disputing that. Therefore they understand he is the perpetrator and is responsible.
The message being sent is Vince Li will be punished, he will be incarcerated.

Experts anticipate Li's lawyers, who have said they don't dispute Li is responsible for McLean's death, will try to prove that, because of mental-health issues, Li was not criminally responsible for his actions.

What seems to be the issue for Mrs DeDelley is the criminal responsibility. To be criminally responsible one has to be cognizant, aware. Was Li? It doesn't seem so.
So how can he possibley be found to be criminally responsible? He can't. But that doesn't change the fact that he is responsible and will be incarcerated for the rest of his life.
Does Mrs Delley want to punish mentally ill people for being brain diseased/damaged?
Mrs DeDelley says there is no punishment sufficient enough for the murder of her child. I agree. There never would be, there never could be a sufficient punishment for such a crime. But why tie a beloved childs name to a cruel law, a law that would be injust and a step backwards in the history of humankind??

Well anyway, lets see how this trial comes along..
I am curious will we learn anything of Vince Li's past?? I have always wondered if he had a military background?

Tim's Law complete with product promotion?

Family of man killed on Greyhound bus pressing for 'Tim's law'

McLean's family is selling T-shirts, buttons and fridge magnets to support its effort to press the government for the legislation. The items are made by Speer and her husband, who operate a promotional product business in Winnipeg.
(Speer is aunt to Tim Mclean)

Understanding everyone grieves differently, and as a parent, I feel for this family and this mother. That said, I disagree with the very concept of Tim's Law. It seems by it's nature inhumane and as a Mother, I do not think I would want my childs name linked to an inhumane law. Mentally ill people have long suffered at the whims of society. For having a brain that does not function correctly. They have been imprisoned, beaten, tortured, drowned, electro-shocked, does anyone think it is pleasant or wonderful to be mentally ill?

Vince Li is not going to go free. He will likely be incarcerated for the rest of his life. I do not see how Vince Li can be held "responsible".

Also recalling the brutal murder/dismemberment and tortures conducted by Paul Bernardo and his wife, Karla Homolka. I do not remember their victims families promoting products to support any political efforts.

This leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I don't know. It could be just me. But, that is my opinion. And, if anyone wishes to disagree with me, please feel free, but do so with courtesy. Don't use the cover of anonymity to attack people who have a different opinion. That is cowardly.

Vince Li trial begins tomorrow

Greyhound bus murder trial set to begin Tuesday

"The man accused of stabbing and decapitating a fellow passenger aboard a Greyhound bus will face trial on Tuesday, and lawyers from both sides are expected to focus on whether he was insane at the time of the attack.

Vince Li, 40, is charged with second-degree murder. His lawyers are not disputing that he killed 22-year-old Tim McLean. Instead, they will likely question whether Li should be found criminally responsible.

If the judge agrees that Li was insane at the time of the attack, and not criminally responsible, Li could be released or hospitalized indefinitely.

That possibility has upset McLean's mother, Carol DeDelley. She wants politicians to pass "Tim's Law," which would mean anyone convicted of murder would be incarcerated for life, with no chance of parole.

"I believe there should be treatment and punishment," she said.

But Prof. Arthur Schafer, director of the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics at the University of Manitoba, said it would be morally irresponsible to change the current law.

He said the justice system must distinguish between someone who is aware they have committed a crime, and someone who is not in control of his or her actions.

"There is a fundamental distinction between being morally and criminally responsible because you know what you're doing, and being insane, where you don't know what you are doing," he said.

"That's the basis of our criminal justice system and we can't abolish it."
